The U.S. Navy has a long history of producing ships that are incredibly long. And from the Top 15 longest ships of the U.S Navy, here’s what we know:

LONGEST SHIPS

The longest ship the U.S. Navy ever operated was the USS Enterprise, at 342 meters long. According to Naval Technology, it is the largest active warship globally since its launch in 1960. Additionally, we can also compare its length to about three times as long as an NFL Football field, according to themeasureofthings.com.   

Following the USS Enterprise would be the Gerald R. Ford class, the Nimitz class, and four more ships with a length of above 300 meters long.    

After that, we’ll have the Lexington Class, the Iowa Class, and five more ships measuring above 250 meters long before reaching the Alaska Class, the shortest ship on the list. According to the National WW2 Museum, the Alaska Class are large cruisers commissioned by the U.S. Navy during the second world war. It has a length of 246 meters, which is equivalent to two-and-a-half times as long as the height of Big Ben, as per themeasureofthings.com.    

Additionally, ten out of the 15 ships in this list are Aircraft Carriers, while the other five ships are divided between one Battleship, three Amphibious Assault Ships, and one Large Cruiser. 

Lastly, many of these ships have also participated in significant World War 2 events, according to the Naval History and Heritage Command. One notable ship during these events is the 251 meter-long USS Yorktown, which played an essential role in the Battle of Midway in June of 1942, as per naval-encyclopedia.com. Another is the 270 meter-long USS Lexington, which participated in the Battle of the Coral Sea in May of 1942, according to history.com.
