In Real Life: Boo Of Octonauts

This bizarre-looking fish from the series is known to be a Barreleye Fish. If you are interested to know these creatures better, here is Boo of Octonauts in real life.

Comparing their appearances, Boo has a see-through head with green eyes. In real life, Barreleye Fish have dome-shaped transparent heads that contain their green eyes. Due to their transparent heads, people often mistake their small oval-shaped noses called nares for their eyes.

Now, let’s compare their abilities. Since Boo has a transparent head, he is able to see what’s above him. He is also known to live in the deep sea, where Peso met him. And according to Animalspot.net, Barreleye fish are deep water creatures that live at a depth of  3330ft.

Since they live in that depth, their tubular eyes are covered with a green fluid shield that allows them to locate their prey in pitch dark areas. Additionally, these eyes enable them to see upward and straight ahead. According to the article written by Natasha Ishak from All That’s Interesting blog, scientists believed that Barreleye fish look upwards to see the shadows of their potential target and then ambush them.

Speaking of ambush, this type of fish is also known as ambush predators. From what we have read from Animal Spot, Barreleye fish stay motionless but will quickly swim upward to attack their prey.

As seen in the series, Boo is seen to be friendly towards Peso and keeps him company until he is rescued. Generally, Barreleye fish are non-aggressive unless provoked.
